By Indus Zone Media Company | Updated: October 29, 2025 | Yogi Government Raises Sugarcane Prices Again
The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has given a big Diwali gift to farmers by increasing the State Advised Price (SAP) of sugarcane by ₹30 per quintal for the 2025–26 crushing season. With this new rate, farmers will now receive ₹400 per quintal for early-maturing cane and ₹390 per quintal for general varieties.
This decision is expected to directly benefit more than 4.6 million sugarcane farmers across the state and increase their overall income by nearly ₹3,000 crore. Experts believe this move could also strengthen the ruling party’s position ahead of the upcoming panchayat and assembly elections.
🟩 Key Highlights
Rs 30 hike in sugarcane price for 2025–26
Farmers to get Rs 400/quintal for early cane and Rs 390/quintal for general cane
Over 46 lakh farmers to benefit across Uttar Pradesh
Fourth price hike since 2017
History of Sugarcane Price Hikes under Yogi Government
Since the BJP government came to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has revised sugarcane prices multiple times to support farmers.
2017–18: Rs 10 increase per quintal
2021–22: Rs 25 increase per quintal before state elections
2023–24: Rs 20 increase per quintal ahead of Lok Sabha polls
2025–26: Rs 30 increase per quintal — highest so far
In total, the government has raised the sugarcane price by Rs 85 per quintal in the last eight years.
Impact on Farmers and Industry
According to the state’s Sugarcane Minister, this decision will significantly boost the rural economy. Over the years, the Yogi government has ensured timely payments to farmers and introduced digital transparency through the online cane slip system.
The minister also highlighted that since 2017, the sugar industry in Uttar Pradesh has seen an investment of ₹12,000 crore. The state has opened four new sugar mills, restarted six closed mills, and expanded production capacity in 42 factories.
Today, Uttar Pradesh leads the country in sugarcane cultivation, sugar production, and ethanol output. The cane cultivation area has grown from 9.5 million hectares in 2017 to nearly 29.5 lakh hectares today.
Comparison with Other States
After the recent hike, Uttar Pradesh’s sugarcane price has surpassed that of Maharashtra (₹355) and Karnataka (₹355). However, the rate is still slightly lower than Haryana (₹415) and Punjab (₹401), where sugarcane farmers enjoy the highest returns.
Political Angle: A Strategic Move Ahead of Elections
Political analysts see this move as a strategic step by the BJP government to connect with rural voters. With panchayat elections due next year and assembly elections in 2027, the price hike could help the NDA alliance strengthen its farmer base.
The BJP aims to secure a major victory in local elections to build momentum for the assembly polls. The sugarcane price increase, being one of the biggest in recent years, is likely to play a key role in shaping voter sentiment in western and central UP — regions where sugarcane is the main crop.
Government’s Focus on Farmer Welfare
Before 2017, many sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh were shut down or sold due to mismanagement. The Yogi administration claims to have brought transparency and accountability to the sector.
Between 2017 and 2025, the state government has cleared 2.9 lakh crore in cane payments to farmers — nearly double the amount paid during the previous decade (1.47 lakh crore).
This consistent focus on farmer welfare and industry revival has helped Uttar Pradesh maintain its top spot in India’s sugarcane economy.
Summary Table – Sugarcane Price Hikes Under Yogi Government
Crushing Season Price Hike (Rs/quintal) Early Variety (Rs/quintal) General Variety (Rs/quintal)
2017–18 10 330 320
2021–22 25 350 340
2023–24 20 370 360
2025–26 30 400 390
Conclusion
The latest increase in sugarcane prices by the Yogi government reflects its continued commitment to farmer welfare and economic growth in rural areas. While the hike strengthens the income of millions of farmers, it also boosts the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
With Uttar Pradesh maintaining its leadership in sugar, ethanol, and cane production, this new decision marks another step toward “Prosperous Farmers, Strong Uttar Pradesh.”
