When Will Rajasthan’s Local Body Elections Take Place?
For the past several months, there has been ongoing debate in Rajasthan over the timing of municipal and panchayat elections. The opposition Congress party has been repeatedly criticizing the government for delaying these polls.
Now, Urban Development and Housing (UDH) Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra has finally cleared the air. He confirmed that the municipal body elections in Rajasthan will be held in December 2025, and all local bodies will vote together under the “One State, One Election” system.
Notification to Be Issued Within a Week
During his visit to Nagaur, Minister Kharra addressed the media and said that the notification for the municipal wards’ re-demarcation will be released within the next five to seven days.
He explained that the state government has already completed the reorganization of urban local bodies and that once the notification is out, the State Election Commission will be requested to begin preparing the voter lists.
After the electoral rolls are finalized, the government will formally ask the Commission to hold elections for all municipal bodies on the same day in December 2025, ensuring smooth and fair polls across Rajasthan.
Rajasthan Currently Has 312 Municipal Bodies
Minister Kharra revealed that there are currently 312 urban local bodies in the state. However, this number will soon reduce to 309 after merging duplicate corporations in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota, where there are currently two municipal corporations each.
He emphasized that the government is fully committed to conducting elections under the One State, One Election model in December 2025.
Panchayat Elections Also Planned Together
Speaking on panchayat elections, the minister added that the state’s position remains consistent — these polls will also be conducted under the One State, One Election approach.
However, the reorganization of panchayats and panchayat samitis is currently under judicial review, with several petitions pending before the Rajasthan High Court. The government is presenting its side strongly in court, and once the verdict is delivered, the panchayat elections will be held simultaneously with the municipal polls.
Conclusion
With the merger of three municipal corporations and the announcement of December 2025 elections, Rajasthan is preparing for a massive democratic exercise across 309 local bodies.
The government’s push for the One State, One Election model aims to simplify the election process, save costs, and ensure greater participation across urban and rural areas alike.
If everything goes as planned, Rajasthan could become one of the first states in India to successfully implement this unified election model.
