Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Coimbatore on Wednesday to inaugurate the Natural Farmers Summit, a major gathering aimed at promoting indigenous and sustainable farming practices across South India. The event drew nearly 50,000 farmers, marking one of the largest agricultural outreach programmes in the region.
PM Releases Rs 18,000 Crore Under PM-Kisan Scheme
During his address, PM Modi released the latest Rs 18,000 crore PM-Kisan instalment, benefitting nine crore farmers nationwide, including lakhs of beneficiaries from Tamil Nadu. With this tranche, the Union government has now transferred Rs 4 lakh crore directly to farmers’ accounts under the PM-Kisan scheme.

The Prime Minister praised the contribution of South India to agricultural development, describing the region as a “living agricultural university” enriched by traditional irrigation systems, temple ponds and ancient water-management structures.
Focus on Natural Farming and Agricultural Innovation
Highlighting the growing need for sustainable practices, PM Modi reiterated that natural farming reduces input costs, protects soil health and helps fight climate change. He noted that Tamil Nadu has already adopted natural farming on 35,000 hectares, showcasing the state’s leadership in eco-friendly agriculture.
The Prime Minister encouraged farmers to experiment with natural farming under the “one acre, one season” approach before scaling up. He urged agricultural universities to include natural farming in their curricula and called on researchers to treat village farmlands as “living laboratories”.
He also emphasised combining natural farming with India’s rising millet ecosystem, calling millets a “superfood” that can significantly increase rural incomes. South India’s multi-storeyed farming models, particularly in Kerala and Karnataka, were highlighted as examples that states across India can replicate.
Political Significance: Roadshow Signals Early Campaign Push
PM Modi’s Coimbatore trip also featured a massive roadshow, his first after the NDA’s recent victory in Bihar. The event is widely seen as the beginning of the BJP-NDA’s preparations for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The BJP has revived its alliance with the AIADMK, though the opposition space remains fragmented. The AIADMK continues to face internal challenges after losing multiple elections, with leaders like O. Panneerselvam, TTV Dhinakaran and Sasikala no longer part of the party or the NDA. Meanwhile:
PMK is dealing with leadership disputes
DMDK is yet to finalise its electoral plan
Actor Vijay’s TVK is expected to debut in the 2026 polls
On the other hand, the ruling DMK and its alliance partners remain strong after three consecutive victories. The DMK continues to attack the BJP on issues related to Tamil identity, language, heritage and alleged financial bias—charges the BJP firmly rejects.
BJP’s Strategy in Tamil Nadu
With the Bihar win boosting morale, the BJP hopes PM Modi’s outreach at the Farmers Summit and his high-energy Coimbatore roadshow will help the NDA gain momentum in Tamil Nadu—one of the few major states where national parties have struggled to secure a strong foothold.
