The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to launch a redesigned Aadhaar mobile app that promises greater control, improved security, and seamless identity verification for millions of users. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the upgraded app will allow residents to store and manage Aadhaar details of up to five family members, making it easier to access and share identity information when needed.
The new version is expected to roll out next month and will mark a major shift toward paperless, secure, and selective identity sharing, especially for use at hotels, airports, gated societies, events, and other high-traffic access points.
What’s New in UIDAI’s Aadhaar App?
The upcoming Aadhaar app has been redesigned with a strong focus on user privacy, offline verification, and simple demographic updates. Here are the key features:
🔹 Store Aadhaar Details for Up to 5 Family Members
Users can keep multiple Aadhaar profiles on the same device, helping families manage essential identity details from one platform.
🔹 Instant Mobile Number & Address Updates
The app will support quick updates of mobile numbers and addresses, eliminating the need to visit an Aadhaar centre for most cases.
🔹 Selective Information Sharing
Users can choose whether to share their full Aadhaar information or only required portions (like photo or QR code), adding a major layer of privacy.
🔹 One-Click Biometric Lock/Unlock
Biometric data can be locked or unlocked instantly from the app, reducing risks of misuse.
🔹 Stronger Offline Verification System
Through QR-based authentication, businesses and institutions will be able to verify Aadhaar details without accessing any personal data online.
Why UIDAI is Pushing for Offline Verification
During a webinar on November 19, UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar highlighted India’s growing need for secure and private digital identity checks. He explained that:
Offline verification reduces dependence on photocopies or physical Aadhaar cards.
It curbs misuse of Aadhaar data and prevents fraudulent practices.
A comprehensive ecosystem has been developed to support offline identity verification nationwide.
The goal is to create a privacy-first approach where users can prove identity without exposing personal details unnecessarily.
Where the New Aadhaar App Will Be Most Useful
UIDAI officials detailed several scenarios where the new offline verification process can be adopted:
Hotel check-ins
Residential society entry
Event and conference access
Airport and travel identity checks
Workplace entry monitoring
Digital KYC processes
The QR-based system will also allow entities to verify identity without storing any personal data, helping build a more secure authentication environment.
Technical Improvements Under the Hood
Vivek Chandra Verma, DDG at UIDAI, explained the technical framework of the app:
It will support multiple modes of offline verification, including facial verification and QR-code scanning.
It is built for future integration with digital identity platforms.
Organisations interested in using offline Aadhaar verification can register as Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs).
The session received strong participation from industry partners, with many expressing interest in integrating the new verification tools into their services.
Why This Update Matters
The upcoming Aadhaar app aims to make India’s digital identity ecosystem:
More secure
More private
More convenient
Less dependent on physical documents
For residents, the biggest advantages will be instant updates, family Aadhaar management, and hassle-free verification at common access points.
