The Indus Zone Media Desk | Srinagar, November 30 | Kashmir Shivers as Temperatures Plunge Below Freezing
Kashmir is experiencing an intense cold wave as temperatures across the Valley dipped sharply below the freezing point, according to the latest advisory issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.4°C, while Pahalgam and Kupwara emerged as the coldest locations, registering minus 5.6°C and minus 5°C respectively.
Icy Nights Grip the Valley
A thick layer of ice formed overnight across several parts of Kashmir, coating vehicles, rooftops, and water bodies. The sudden temperature drop has intensified the winter chill, forcing residents to delay their morning routines and prompting early closure of markets in Srinagar and adjoining districts.
IMD Warns of Further Temperature Drop
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has forecasted a further fall of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius over the next seven days. The advisory also warns of shallow to moderate fog in many locations across the Kashmir division, which may affect visibility during early morning and late evening hours.
Tourism Sector Pins Hopes on Snowfall
Amid the freezing spell, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed optimism that the upcoming snowfall could boost winter tourism in the region. Stressing long-term planning, he reiterated the need for sustainable development to support tourism without harming the fragile ecosystem.
Life Slows Down as Cold Tightens Its Grip
The harsh weather conditions have significantly altered daily life. Morning footfall in markets has reduced, schools are witnessing lower attendance, and residents have increased the use of traditional heating systems, including firepots and electric heaters.
Authorities have advised citizens to take precautions against extreme cold, especially the elderly and children.
