The Indus Zone Media Desk | Published: Nov 23, 2024 | Cyclone ‘Senyar’ Likely to Form Over Bay of Bengal
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of worsening weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal as a fresh cyclonic circulation shows signs of intensifying. According to the latest updates, heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions are expected to impact the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the next few days.
IMD Warns of Intensifying System from November 21
Weather officials have indicated that the cyclonic circulation currently brewing over the southeast Bay of Bengal may strengthen further beginning November 21. As a result, the IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rain alerts for several parts of the islands.
Nicobar Islands may experience very heavy rainfall ranging between 7–20 cm at isolated locations.
Andaman Islands are likely to receive heavy showers of 7–11 cm.
The forecast also includes thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph, particularly on November 24 and 25.
Cyclone to Be Named ‘Senyar’ If System Intensifies
If the weather disturbance evolves into a full-fledged cyclonic storm, it will be named Cyclone Senyar.
The name “Senyar,” meaning “lion”, was proposed by the United Arab Emirates as part of the WMO–ESCAP panel’s roster for the North Indian Ocean.
The naming follows the standard procedure used for earlier cyclones such as Cyclone Montha, which affected coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Telangana.
Rough Seas and High Waves: Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
With sea conditions deteriorating rapidly, authorities have issued strict warnings for fishermen, tourists and boat operators.
Key Advisories:
Fishermen are strongly urged not to venture into the Andaman Sea until November 23.
The Port Blair port has issued Local Cautionary Signal No. 3, indicating rough weather and potential danger for small vessels.
Recreational marine activities should be carried out with extreme caution due to the possibility of high and surging waves.
Officials also noted that tourist boats and local ferries must operate with maximum vigilance, keeping weather advisories in focus.
Shipping Services May Face Disruptions
The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) has stated that inter-island and mainland vessel operations may be rescheduled or suspended at short notice if the weather deteriorates further. Passenger safety and vessel security remain their highest priority.
What Residents and Tourists Should Keep in Mind
Follow IMD updates regularly.
Avoid sea travel unless absolutely necessary.
Reconsider adventure and water-based tourism activities.
Boat owners should secure their vessels and avoid deep-sea movement.
