The Indus Zone Tech Desk | Mumbai, November 13, 2025 | Sherfane Rutherford Joins Mumbai Indians for IPL 2026
In a major pre-auction move, West Indies all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford has been officially traded to Mumbai Indians (MI) from Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the IPL 2026 season. The trade, confirmed by the IPL Media Advisory, sees Rutherford move to MI for his existing contract value of ₹2.6 crore.
Sherfane Rutherford Strengthens Mumbai Indians’ Middle Order
At just 27, Rutherford brings valuable international experience and power-hitting skills to the Mumbai Indians squad. He has represented West Indies in 44 T20 internationals and is known for his aggressive batting style. Notably, he holds the record for the highest sixth-wicket partnership in T20I cricket, scoring a 139-run stand with Andre Russell against Australia in Perth — a memorable highlight of his career.
With his ability to finish innings and contribute with handy medium pace, Rutherford is expected to add much-needed depth to MI’s middle order as they gear up for another championship run in IPL 2026.
Journey Through IPL Teams
Rutherford has been part of multiple IPL franchises since his debut season. He first played for the Delhi Capitals in 2019, followed by a stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2022.
Although he was previously part of Mumbai Indians (2020) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) squads, he didn’t get a chance to feature in the playing XI during those seasons. His move back to Mumbai now gives him another opportunity to showcase his T20 firepower for one of the league’s most successful teams.
Mumbai Indians Eye Balanced Squad for IPL 2026
The five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians, have been active in the trade window, looking to rebuild their squad with impactful players before the IPL 2026 auction. Rutherford’s inclusion follows their recent trade for Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants, signaling MI’s intent to strengthen both their batting and bowling depth.
With the player retention deadline set for November 15, teams are finalizing their line-ups, and MI’s latest moves suggest a strategic plan to blend international firepower with domestic consistency.
