The Sri Padmavati Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) campus in Tirupati echoed with patriotic spirit as students, research scholars, faculty, and staff came together to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ on Friday.
The event, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Uma, paid heartfelt tributes to the iconic song penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875 — a composition that continues to inspire generations with its message of unity, courage, and devotion to the motherland.
🌸 A Timeless Symbol of Patriotism and National Pride
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Uma highlighted that ‘Vande Mataram’ remains one of the most powerful symbols of India’s freedom struggle and cultural heritage.
“Written in 1875, Vande Mataram continues to stand as a timeless emblem of national pride, unity, and devotion to India,” she said, adding that Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s words ignited patriotic fervour and became an anthem for India’s independence movement.
🧵 Handloom Tribute in Tricolour Spirit
Adding a unique touch to the celebration, students and teachers arrived dressed in handloom sarees representing the tricolour of the national flag — saffron, white, and green — symbolizing unity in diversity.
SPMVV has already adopted a sustainable tradition of wearing handloom on the 7th of every month, promoting Indian weavers and local craftsmanship. This special date coincided with the 150th ‘Vande Mataram’ anniversary, making the occasion even more memorable.
🎶 Campus Resonates with ‘Vande Mataram’
The celebration began with the collective singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ by students and faculty, filling the campus with emotion and reverence. The gathering also observed a moment of silence to honour the spirit of India’s freedom fighters and cultural icons.
Registrar N. Rajani, deans of various schools, and senior faculty members participated in the event alongside hundreds of students, reflecting SPMVV’s commitment to nurturing patriotism and cultural awareness among young women.
🇮🇳 Legacy of ‘Vande Mataram’
Composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875 and later included in his novel Anandamath, Vande Mataram played a crucial role in India’s national awakening. The song’s powerful lyrics and melody continue to inspire millions, symbolizing India’s spirit of resilience and unity.
