The Indus Zone Tech Desk | Kolkata Weather Update (October 30, 2025) | Cyclone Montha Weakens
Cyclone Montha has now weakened into a depression, but its effects continue to bring heavy rainfall and cloudy skies across several parts of West Bengal. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the wet spell may continue till Saturday, especially in north and south Bengal districts.
Kolkata Sees Continuous Rain and Dark Skies
The city of Kolkata witnessed overcast skies and light to moderate rain since Wednesday morning. According to the Alipore Met Office, around 8mm of rainfall was recorded between Tuesday night and Wednesday night. The weather department said conditions in Kolkata will begin to improve gradually from Sunday.
Coastal and South Bengal Districts Drenched
Heavy showers were reported in East Midnapore, South 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and Nadia, with strong winds lashing the coastal areas. The sea at Digha turned rough, prompting authorities to warn tourists to stay away from the water.
Farmers in several districts have also reported crop damage due to excessive rain and waterlogging.
North Bengal Braces for Stronger Showers
While south Bengal continues to face moderate rainfall, north Bengal is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain (7–20 cm) on Friday and Saturday. The affected areas include Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar.
The IMD stated that moisture from Cyclone Montha will likely intensify rain in the hill and foothill regions.
Cyclone Montha’s Journey Across States
Cyclone Montha made landfall on Tuesday evening between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam along the Andhra Pradesh coast, bringing wind speeds of 90–100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h.
After landfall, it moved north-northwest, crossing Odisha and heading toward Chhattisgarh. By Wednesday morning, it had already weakened into a deep depression.
As per the latest IMD bulletin, the system was located around 50 km south of Bhadrachalam (Andhra Pradesh) and 220 km southwest of Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh). It is likely to move further north and gradually lose strength, turning into a low-pressure area over the next 24 hours.
Possible Impact on Other States
Weather experts predict that as the system weakens, it could still influence Jharkhand, Bihar, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The moisture incursion from these regions may increase rainfall activity in northern parts of Bengal.
A senior IMD official in Kolkata said, “If the system continues to move north, it will push more moisture toward north Bengal, resulting in heavier showers.”
Safety Advisory for Residents
Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and riverbank areas to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. Fishermen along the coastal belt have been advised not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve.
